Eureka! Two New Discoveries

After more than twenty-five years researching Hirschfeld’s work, dozens of exhibitions, thousands of clippings, posters and all sorts of printed ephemera, one would think we have documented all of Hirschfeld’s work. We have over 8,000 individual drawings listed on our website (nearly 6,000 of them with images) and we have scoured many archives to find images. We think we have more than 95% of what Hirschfeld drew in our database, with the earliest work from the 1920s, both before and after he discovered caricature, to be the period with the most “missing” works.

Tale of the Shirt

Last summer we learned how many people love Hirschfeld t-shirts. At the “Hirschfeld Century” exhibition at the New York Historical Society, the gift shop featured two shirts with Hirschfeld artwork and the shop soon discovered it was hard to keep them in stock. People love to draw attention to their love of Hirschfeld art by wearing the shirts, and so we decided to start a “T-shirt of the Month” club with small runs of shirts with a variety of images.

Drawing Attention

The response to the Foundation’s Shop website has been gratifying. We are delighted that people want to see and learn of Hirschfeld’s prodigious output, and certainly his print oeuvre is among his most popular work, as so many people live with these prints. Probably the most often asked question since we have launched the site is when will original drawings be available? We always knew that it would be in the near future, so we are happy to announce the time is now.
